Temporary Emergency Structural Shoring
Temporary Emergency Structural Shoring - Emergency Service
Shoring, form of prop or support, usually temporary, that is used during the repair or original construction of buildings and in excavations. Temporary support may be required, for example, to relieve the load on a masonry wall while it is repaired or reinforced. Our experts are trained to find any areas that are in need of structural support.
Emergency Structural Shoring in Chicago and the Surrounding Suburbs
When a fire, crash or storm weakens a wall, floor or roof, the building can be dangerous to enter. Temporary shoring adds supports that carry the load until permanent repairs are made. Accurate Board-Up & Glass installs emergency shoring day or night.
When shoring is needed
- Roof rafters or trusses burned or broken
- Floor joists weakened by fire or water
- Walls or columns struck by a vehicle
- Partial collapse after a storm or heavy snow
- Foundation or basement wall movement
- Buildings cited by the city as unsafe
How emergency shoring works
Our crew inspects the damaged area and identifies what is holding the weight. We then install adjustable steel posts, timber posts and headers to transfer the load to solid ground or sound framing. Shoring is set plumb and braced so it will not shift. The goal is a stable structure that fire investigators, adjusters, engineers and contractors can enter safely.
Shoring and board up together
Most shoring jobs also need the building closed up. We handle both on the same visit: stabilize the structure first, then board windows, doors and openings.
Working with engineers and the city
For larger jobs we work with your structural engineer and follow the shoring plan they provide. If the City of Chicago or a suburb has issued an unsafe building notice, our shoring helps meet the order so the building is not demolished before you have a chance to repair it.
Documented for your claim
Every shoring job comes with photos and an itemized invoice for your insurance adjuster.

Frequently Asked Questions About Temporary Emergency Structural Shoring
How long can temporary shoring stay in place?
As long as the repair takes, which can be weeks or months. We can check the shoring on request and adjust it if the repair plan changes.
Do I need an engineer before you shore the building?
Not for emergency stabilization. We shore the building first so it is safe. For larger or complex repairs we then follow the plan your structural engineer provides.
Is emergency shoring covered by insurance?
In most cases yes. Shoring prevents further damage and possible demolition, so it is normally part of the claim. We supply photos and an itemized invoice for the adjuster.
When does a building need shoring?
After a fire burns rafters or joists, when a vehicle hits a wall or column, after a partial collapse from a storm or heavy snow, when a foundation wall moves, or when the city has issued an unsafe building notice.
What is emergency structural shoring?
Shoring is a set of temporary supports, usually steel or timber posts and headers, that carry the weight of a damaged wall, floor or roof until permanent repairs are made. It makes the building safe to enter.
